Behind the Mirror
Behind the Mirror is named after the modernist French art magazine founded in the 1940s by Aime Maeght, owner of the famous Galerie Maeght, who as a collector, dealer, exhibition-maker, and publisher made a remarkable contribution to art in the mid-twentieth century, serving artists such as Miro, Calder, Giacometti, and Braque.
The first concert happened back in 2011 and felt like a step into the unknown. More concerts followed and I recognised it as a vital creative outlet for me as a young mother, wanting to bring all the interesting work I was doing as a professional musician to my home town so that my young children and their friends could experience it, but also wanting to explore and create new experiences.
Over the past 14 years it has slowly developed into something adventurous and experimental, involving some of the best musicians in the country. I treat it as a seedbed for new ideas and new collaborations; each year sees the creation of a series of unique programmes often including new commissions from leading young British composers such as Edmund Finnis, Freya Waley-Cohen, Luke Bedford, Nick Martin and David Bruce amongst others.
I have steadily built up a loyal following mainly through word of mouth, which has enabled the series, through consistent ticket sales, to flourish.
Concerts take place at easily accessible venues on Berkhamsted High Street - Berkhamsted Town Hall and St Peter’s Church, and tickets for under 18s are free.
